How to Pack for Hawaii

Diamond Head Sunset on Oahu

If you're reading this, I have a feeling that you have probably clicked on several other '10 Things to Take with You on Vacation'.  There are lists everywhere and it's not that they're bad, it's just that they kinda assume the only thing you're going to do is lay on the beach all day.  If that's true, I approve, more power to you and have fun.  But most people have a couple of other things in mind.

Take an objective look at yourself.  Are you a fashion girl or more sporty?  Do you plan on wearing the same amount of makeup that you normally do?  Excited about wearing nothing but flip flops or does the idea of having zero heels in your luggage make you cringe?

To have an enjoyable vacation (or move!) you really need to think about what you want to DO. Are you happy with low key quality time with friends or your significant other or are you looking to turn heads and fill your Instagram feed with tropically inspired outfits?

Regardless, the climate plays an (obvious) role.  It's not cold.  Even in winter when the temperature "drops" it's not cold.  It rains occasionally but it's more of a mist that makes you feel a little silly for bringing along an umbrella.  The only downpours are usually accompanied by a hurricane watch but don't worry, it doesn't happen often.  As a whole this is the land of gorgeous weather you're bound to love.

To make things simple, let's start with the things every girl should bring, regardless of your agenda:

  • bikinis.  As many as you want.
  • cover-up(s)
  • cutoff denim shorts
  • a couple of cute tanks
  • romper
  • easy sundress
  • flip-flops.  You'll hear people call them slippers here.
  • Your favorite beach accessories - shades, hat, beach bag, etc.

The city is like none other - perfect for a little laid back lounging and relaxing with friends.

Hawaii Beaches Hilton Village at Waikiki
With beaches literally everywhere you look, you'll want to make sure you bring a lot of swimsuits and cover-ups.

Now you'll need to do a little planning.

If you're dying to hit the waves and get some shots of you surfing like a pro, you'll need:

  • A seriously stay-put swimsuit.  And I do mean serious - the last thing you want to do while catching a wave is worry about whether you're flashing Waikiki.
  • If you're wanting to go snorkling, consider bringing along water shoes as the rocks can be exceptionally sharp.
  • Consider investing in a long-sleeve one-piece rashguard for surfing.  While it's not quite as sexy as an itty-bitty bikini or that cutout one-piece, it won't ride up and you're guaranteed not to show your boobs to anyone and it prevents the serious chafing that can happen in just a hour on a surfboard.  Try a few styles on to find one that's flattering.

If those magical mountains are calling your name:

  • Well broken in hiking boots/shoes.  Expect that there may be some mud and standing water - be ready to get a little dirty.
  • I prefer to wear shorts and a light-weight tank simply due to the heat and humidity.  There are some branches that can grab at your legs so if you're sensitive to that you may want to wear long pants.  Either way make sure it's nothing too tight or too loose.
  • For any hike you'll need to bring along water, even if it's a short one, simply as a safety precaution.  It's not a bad idea to always bring your phone as well, just in case.
  • For any hike that is projected to take you at least two hours or longer, bring a backpack and stock it well.  Think lightweight but plan for worst-case:
    • A mini first-aid kit
    • Snacks to keep your energy up
    • Extra water
    • Gatorade
    • Gloves (if it's a more difficult hike)
    • A light jacket - it can be quite cool up at the summits and if you end up having to spend the night in the jungle you'll be glad you brought it.
  • Consider bringing a whistle, flashlight, map and compass.

If all that working out doesn't sound like a vacation to you and you'd rather hit up the restaurants and nightlife:

  • Your favorite dress/skirt/shorts/whatever makes you feel confident.  You'll see everything from super short and tight to sophisticated to laid back.
  • Your most comfortable pair of heels but know you'll probably only where them for a specific occasion (dinner, a shopping date, etc)
  • If you really can't stand the idea of not wearing heels during the day bring along a pair of kitten heels or wedges as a compromise.  Find some chic sandals and you'll fit right in.

So there you have it!  Just because it's a fun, laid back vacation doesn't mean you have to abandon your style completely.  A few tweaks here and there, lightweight fabrics and some activity-specific outfits will make sure you don't spend your entire vacation stressing that you have nothing to wear.  Happy packing!
