May 2014, Kentucky Derby 140 Louisville
Derby 140 will be running on the 2nd and 3rd of May 2014!
At the bare minimum of $40 per ticket to even get in the gates to the Kentucky Derby (and those tickets are standing room only), we think it's safe to say that come the first Friday and Saturday of May 2014 we will not be in Louisville watching the most exciting 2 minutes in sports (not to say we might not be going to a Kentucky Derby party here in Savannah though)!  If you want somewhere to sit, make sure you purchase tickets in advance - they'll range from about $275 for the least expensive to well into the tens of thousands for the nicest areas.  If you are planning on going to Louisville on the 2nd and 3rd of May make sure you take a look at the actual Kentucky Derby website for a wealth of information:  everything from travel information to prohibited items to which horses are running to pretty much anything else you might need to know.

Typical fashion for the Kentucky Derby is lighter pastel colors in either cute dresses, skirts and a blouse or a chic suit - complete with hat of course!

Ladies aren't the only ones that get to have fun!  Gentlemen get a chance to show off their debonair side at the Derby - materials of choice?  Seersucker and lightweight summer wool.

Regardless of whether or not you're actually going to the race, we're all for getting into the spirit.  If there isn't a party, you can always get a group together to go watch the races...and what better way to get in the mood than with a Kentucky Derby inspired outfit!  Whether it's a cute sundress, a pastel cotton or silk skirt with a cute top or a smart suit this is your chance to really get creative with fashion and express your inner Southern Belle.  If you need some help deciding what to wear you can always check out Vineyard Vines, the Official Style of the Kentucky Derby.  No matter what you choose to wear, there's one accessory you cannot leave the house without:  a hat!  And the bigger and bolder, the better.

When it comes to Derby hats, don't hold back - bigger really is better.

Whether you choose a chic, perfectly accentuated hat or something a little more outside the box is entirely up to you.   Show off your personality!
Whether you buy one off the rack, have one custom-made or just get a basic foundation piece and do all the embellishing yourself, don't hold back when it comes to choosing your hat or fascinator.  You can choose the hat first or the outfit first, just make sure that they compliment each other in style, shape and color.  Feeling a little uninspired?  Check out Berkeley Hat - they have a huge selection that is sure to help you discover what kind of Southern Charmer you want to be for the weekend.  You might even find your perfect hat there!

Have fun choosing your hat for the Kentucky Derby!  Play with color, embellishment and patterns - be as minimal or as outrageous as you like.
Whether you're staying home watching the races on tv or actually there at the Derby, remember the whole weekend is about having fun and showing off your personal sense of style.  Personally we'd be rocking something inspired by the headdresses on the Louis Vuitton Spring 2014 Runway - we just hope there wouldn't be any ceiling fans.

While this may not be completely Derby appropriate it would certainly serve as some serious inspiration for a peacock embellished fascinator!
