Everything came together at the 2nd annual Foodies and Fashionistas Runway Show benefiting Relay for Life.
This past Thursday, the 17th of April, we were sitting in hair and makeup getting ready for the Second Annual Foodies and Fashionistas Runway Show, benefiting Relay for Life.  This year the show was held at Panini's downtown Beaufort, SC and was even bigger and better than last year.  Our good friend Starla Little single-handedly headed up the entire event:  from working with Panini's to host the event and provide a portion of the sales to benefit cancer research to coordinating for three stores (Beaufort Clothing Company, Barefoot Bubbas and Lulu's) to showcase their clothes, having the models' hair and makeup done by the amazing team at Color Me Rad, coverage for the event from Jon Arthur Photography, styling from Style to Bits in addition to holding auditions and ultimately choosing seven different models to walk in the show.  To say she's been a little busy might be a slight understatement.

The finale look included floral headpieces
and an orange lip.
Every show is different and this was no exception - from the beautiful hair intertwined with braids and feminine curls to the orange lip and floral headbands for the final look it was complete perfection.  For those who haven't ever experienced backstage at a runway show, we're going to give you a little peek at what it's like.  Step behind the curtain...

Hair and makeup is up to the show coordinator, the designers, stylists and whoever else gets a vote so models come with a clean, make-up free face and clean, un-styled hair.  It's like a spa day that you don't have to pay for so it's actually very nice, besides you get a chance to see what you look like in looks that you wouldn't necessarily try yourself (or you don't know how to do on yourself...or anyone else for that matter).  If you're walking in a runway show you've already been to at least one fitting where you meet with the designer or store owner and/or stylist to try outfits on and see what works best on you - that way, the day of the show you already know exactly what you're wearing.  Chances are your outfits are already grouped together by look and may have your name on it...you might not think that's necessary but once the show gets started and girls are running back and forth trying to get changed, clothes start flying everywhere.  It's much better to be overly organized even if it goes to hell after the first outfit change.

And when we say outfit change, we mean quick, fast and in a hurry.  Depending on how many models are in the show, you have anywhere from 45 seconds to 2 minutes to get changed, including shoes and accessories.  Chances are that beautiful hairstyle they spent so much time creating may get a little messed up but there are dressers backstage to help make sure you don't get lipstick all over everything and there is usually representatives from the hair and makeup team to help quickly touch everything back up and then you're back out there, strutting your stuff on the runway.  It's always really funny to watch girls glide down the catwalk, beautiful and completely perfect...and then the minute they're out of sight of the audience they kick off the shoes and run to the wardrobe station, are naked and completely clothed again in under a minute and a half.  It's impressive.

If you ever get the chance to work backstage as either hair, makeup, styling, dresses...anything really, definitely take the opportunity.  Not only is it a lot of fun but it's also really neat to see how those shows come together and the difference between what the audience sees and what goes on behind the scenes.
