Should Fashion be Considered Art?

9:43 PM

Art:  the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

So does fashion in the form of clothes and accessories fit that definition?  We answer with a clear resounding yes.  Fashion isn't just pretty dresses or fancy shoes, it's about self-expression and showing off your creative side.  Street style is the epitome of everyday fashion and the showcases some of the most bold looks out there.

Street Style Fashion is considered an Art Form
Bright coats with a mini skirt or a crisp white a-line with colored tights and a metallic jacket, street style is anything you can dream up.

Miroslava Duma's Street Style Fashion is a Form of Art
Miroslava Duma is one of the queens of street style - whether she's headed to the latest runway show or just out an about shopping, she certainly knows how to put together an outfit.

Street Style Fashion as an Art Form
Model off duty in all black or a bold, corset belt with ox-blood fur, street style gives you a chance to show off your individual personality.
Art is supposed to make you feel something - evoke an emotional response.  Haute Couture, a term that is actually protected by law and only applies to a few fashion houses in the entire world, create some of the most impressive garments on the planet.  These exclusive, custom fitted clothes that are constructed by hand without any regard for budget aren't necessarily designed to sell, they're more intended to turn the runway into an art exhibit.  Alexander McQueen, Marchesa, Dior...these designers create garments that take hours upon hours to design and actually bring to life that are stunning and take your breathe away at first look.

Haute Couture Oscar de la Renta Fashion as an Artform
Handmade gowns with dozens and dozens of yards of fabric, haute couture garments evoke emotional reactions from their beauty like this beautiful black Dior or hot pink Oscar de la Renta.

Haute Couture Marchesa Fashion is an Artform
Marchesa is one of the leading fashion designers in the world and these stunning ethereal dresses show the craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind nature that goes into the creation.
Though these gowns may not be the most appropriate for everyday life they are certainly gorgeous to look at and are worthy of being out on display.  A time when art and fashion literally collide?  The Costume Institute Benefit better know as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala or for short, the Met Gala.  With a different theme each year and tickets ranging from $15,000 for a single ticket to $150,000 to sponsor a whole table, the Met Gala gives movie stars, singers, models and a host of those who are invited and can afford it the chance to show off their glamorous, high fashion side.  With fashion that makes the Oscars look like the MTV Awards, the one of a kind garments seen there are sure to make you appreciate the time and effort to create.

Stunning, one-of-a-kind looks from Rachel Zoe, Zac Posen and Alexander McQueen on attendees at the Met Gala.

These gowns are gorgeous.  They're beautiful.  And you would love to wear them wouldn't you?  They move us and we would be willing to bet they move you too.  So should fashion be considered art?  Well we consider it to be the most accessible form of expression of creativity.  So get out there - show off your artistic side and show the world just how creative life can be just by walking by.  The world needs more creativity.
