Eyeliner Inspiration to Spice Up Your Eyes

2:03 PM

Eyeliner is one of those things that a girl just has to learn how to do. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that takes dozens and dozens and dozens of tries to get right. It's kind of like walking in heels...you have to practice and stumble at least once or twice (don't shake your head, you know you have, at least once).  But it's also like riding a bike - once you get it, you get it.  So once you've mastered the art, it's time to start making things more intricate which also means more complicated.

As you may or may not know, eyeliner comes in a variety of mediums - from pencil to gel to liquid and can be used singularly or as a combination.  With so much to choose from, it's easy to get a little overwhelmed; use this general rule of thumb:  pencil is the easiest to control while liquid liner is the most difficult but gives you the most precise line.  Again, practice makes perfect - don't get discouraged if it doesn't look perfect the first (or 20th) time you try it, you'll get there.  Just make sure you invest n some quality makeup remover in the meantime!

For those of you who are thinking this is impossible, fear not:  we will show you a couple of articles to help master the basic eyeliner look (YouTube is amazing!) without poking your eye out.  This article from Total Beauty will help walk you through each step for the most basic looks as well as a few more intricate tips.  If you prefer a more visual tutorial this YouTube video from Creative Boss will be right up your alley...for that matter, search eyeliner on YouTube and there will be dozens of videos to help you practice, practice, practice.

For those of you who already know what you're doing and are bored with the basic cat eye, we've complied some of the best complex eyeliner looks to inspire you.  Take a look below at our favorites and try them out yourself!

Geometric Eyeliner Inspiration
Who says eyeliner has to be basic?  Try an updated cat-eye with a double liner; use liquid eyeliner to get the most precise line and a pointed q-tip dipped in eye-makeup remover to erase any mistakes.

Smoky Eye, Geometric Liner and Heavy Brows Creative Eyeliner
Spice up your every-day smoky eye with super heavy brows and down-turned powder at the outer corners of the eyes.  Keep the rest of your face clean and simple and let your eyes do all the talking.

Floating Eyeliner Creative Inspiration
Floating liner is perhaps one of the most difficult looks to master - make sure you hold the eyelid taut when drawing the line or you'll end up with coarse, choppy strokes.

Thick Eyeliner and Dots Anna Sui 2013 Inspiration
This is our personal favorite eyeliner look here at The Polka Dotted Truth - Anna Sui's 2013 Fall Runway look is comprised of thick upper liner and dots on the lower lashline.  Perfect for big nights out or just a Saturday brunch you're sure to get plenty of compliments.

Colored Eyeliner Creative Inspiration
Colored eyeliner has been making a strong comeback the last few seasons and don't expect it to just disappear for 2014.  Try a light electric blue like Creatures of the Wind or a double black and white cat eye that feels very Kate Spade inspired.

Gap Bottom Liner Eyeliner Tanya Taylor
Who says you have to color inside the lines?  Take a page from Tanya Taylor's book and  don't connect the lines on the lower lashline to ensure some second looks.

Reverse Cat Eye Eyeliner Inspiration
Instead of the normal winged cat eye, go bolder - try a reverse cat eye where you mirror the liner on the top lash liner underneath on the lower lash line as well while staying as close to your lashes as possible.  How thick or thin the line is, is completely up to you.
