Top 6 Hair Trends of Spring 2014

8:22 PM

One of the easiest ways to update your look is to update your hairstyle.  Ranging from something as simple as updos and braids to something as drastic as cutting your locks into a choppy bob.  In Spring 2014 we'll see an increase in soft waves and poker straight styles and a conspicuous lack of bouncy curls and perfectly blown out styles.  Trade your high pony for a low one or an embellished braid.  See our top 6 looks to try out this season:

The Choppy Bob
Looking for a transformation?  If you're feeling bold, consider chopping off your long tresses into a short pageboy bob like those at Fendi or into a slightly longer version like the models at Marc Jacobs and Chanel.  Not sure if you're quite that bold?  Consider trying a wig out for a night out to see how you like the shape and style.  You may just surprise yourself and make it a permanent change and if nothing else it will be a fun night incognito.

Textured Waves
Not only is this look super easy to recreate, but unlike super straight hair, it's humidity proof.  If your hair is naturally wavy or slightly curly, sit back and enjoy - your hair styling time just went to practically nil since you can just add mousse and let it air dry.  For those who aren't quite that lucky, add a heavy-hold mousse or a curl enhancing cream and blow dry in sections.  For a more polished look like that seen at Diane Von Furstenburg, after hair is dry, wrap large sections around a large barrel curling iron to create pretty waves.

Braids
Plaited looks are always in vogue for Spring and Summer and this season is no different.  Expect 2014 braids to be messy and out of place like the models at Rachel Zoe and Giles, wrapped up pinned to the head as seen at Rebecca Minkoff or, if you're feeling especially girly, try intertwining ribbons into the braided pigtails like the stylists at Calla Paris.

Wet Look
Seeming to pop up every now and then from season to season, the wet look was seen on several runways such as Herve Ledger and Ferragamo.  Blow dry hair straight or slightly wavy and add gel from the roots to about two inches down.  Try it for a night out with the girls or a date night at a hip new restaurant downtown.

Updo
Okay, so this isn't exactly a trend seeing as how an updo is appropriate for just about any occasion from a fancy gala to work to a date night.  But this season, keep things a little messy and undone like Rochas and Temperley.  Or try out two trends at once like Peter Som's models by taking your wet hair from the day before and turning it into an updo.

The Ponytail
Like the updo, ponytails are always a staple regardless of the season; update yours by making sure it's bound low at nape of your neck and slightly tousled like Derek Lam.  For a touch of whimsy, channel Honor's inspiration and add tiny delicate flowers further back than your ear or at the binding.

Remember one of the easiest ways to stay on trend is to try a new hairstyle or lipstick - take these updated styles out for a spin and revel in the compliments.  Enjoy!
